Bird Island

Bird Island, as you can imagine, gets its name due to the millions of birds that call it home. It is actually the northernmost island of the Seychelles, around 100km from Mahé. The trip to the Island is a 30 minute flight.

The island is home to sooty terns, fairy terns, lesser noddies, white-tailed tropic birds and more. In fact, from the months of May to October, part of Bird Island is home to millions of nesting sooty terns.

Due to the 2000m ocean depth surrounding the island, the marine life there is also incredibly vibrant. In fact, turtles regularly use the beaches of Bird for nesting which is usually done at night time.

Bird is also where you can find the world’s heaviest living tortoise, Esmeralda, who, despite the name, is actually a male weighing in at just over 300kgs. He is believed to be over 150 years old.

Aside from the birds and other creatures, this island is home to only a few residents who mostly work on the island and in the Bird Island Lodge itself.
